The Mendenhall glacier, in Juneau, AK flows through the mountains like a frozen blue sea. The coastal mountain range of Southeast Alaska has been carved by glaciers. A relatively quick hike can help you reach the summit of numerous mountains. As soon as you reach the peak you see it. Flowing like a frozen river, quietly shaping the landscape over millennia. Over or under, I can’t help but be drawn by the frozen blue sea.
After spending a short night on the summit of Mt. McGinnis (epic sunset image was captured) in Juneau, Ak, I awoke at 3am for sunrise. As a result of my short night, I was a bit sleepy. I wanted to find a location the night before, but hadn’t found any good options before drifting off. It was a furious hunt looking for some silene acaulis (cushion pink flowers) that were facing north. They have a tendency to face south, but I knew that I wanted them for my foreground. I love the look of these pink, alpine flowers.
After much hunting, I found a patch on the edge of a cliff that were facing the right direction. I hung from the edge one-handed as the sun began to rise as I captured this fine art image over the frozen blue sea.
