Watching the sunset from Mendenhall Glacier is a unique experience. Most days the sky is full of clouds and there isn’t much color to see. That’s if you’re looking just at the sky! The amazing blue of the Mendenhall glacier in Juneau, Alaska is stunning. Easily one of the most amazing colors you will ever see in nature, glacier blue is hard to believe really exists. I often say it’s the most unnatural natural color in the world.
It’s hard to count the number of times I’ve visited the glacier in Juneau over the years. I love trying to find one of the constantly changing ice caves that crop up all the time in southeast Alaska.
During one of my many trips to the Mendenhall, I spent hours photographing this amazing blue. I hiked, climbed, clamored, crawled, etc. all over the place. After an exhilarating day of sub-freezing temperatures I walked outside to see this amazing color start to hit the clouds. This was definitely a unique opportunity in Juneau as we don’t often have colorful sunsets.
Earlier in the day I had found this ice arch near the terminus of the glacier so I rushed back there to capture this image. I practically bellyflopped off a piece of ice to get to where I needed to be for this composition. The blue ice framed the sky perfectly and I proceeded to take one of my all-time favorite images. Sometimes it’s hard to come up with the perfect title for a fine art image, this one was quite easy. Dream.
